What are you turning with for tools Robert? Do you use a chuck and which type and do you use, and do you use mandrels. I know, do you have a picture of your lathe setup. Might not help but I sure enjoy pictures.
Don't pick a fight with an old man. If he can't win He'll just kill you.
LOL i will get you guys some pics no i don't use a chuck at least not till I can afford to get one.I use a mandrel for pens and key chains and what not and from what i gather you can turn calls on a mandrel I think. I am most interested in duck calls and predator calls . I will go post a few pics of some pens i have done in the pen sec.
If you decide on a collet chuck the PSI is a good chuck at a good price. I make all my calls using a mandrel. It makes the time much quicker and easier. I use a 9/32 , 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4" for most everything. I also just got a carbide chisel from riverat and talk about cutting antler like butter, his chisels are amazing.
Robert, the pen mandrel set up will work for making calls with the rubber thingys that hut sells to adapt them BUT, you will be much happier with one of Chad's mandrels. I make alot of calls, That woulod be ALOT and the rubber thingys do not hold up well. The big difference maybe the only difference between turning call and a pen is the size and shape. The guts of course are another story. They can be the mst frustrating of the whole process. Getting them in right and then getting the sound JUST the way you want it is a challenge. My advice....Go for it and have fun, make one up and run with it.
His bench looks pretty clean compared to mine..... Anler dust??? Did someone say antler dust?? I gotta go......Now I got to make some for myself......
Seriously though a pen mandrel is just about all I use right now.... Ya just have to turn some tapered spacers for the ends... I also have turned some plastic spacers to fit the inside Dia. of specific calls leaving a short shoulder as to leave room for turning the ends of the call...... Then I sand the inside with a rig I made for my drill press and one I made for my cordless drill..... I also made a buffer from a yard sale motor and an old bench grinder. Just make what you need to get you by.....it just takes time and some thinking of what is important to ya. One of these days I will quit giving away so many calls and make enough money for a collet chuck.....but for now the Pen mandrel has many options. I am working on a 5/8" blind mandrel right now that threads right on to my headstock......Grin... Made it on my brother in laws metal lathe.
Bet That's some of the Red cedar I sent Him ! I get a lot of it at my secret source I get it in different sizes so if Ya need some shoot me a PM on the size you need and I will see about working a trade for some other type of wood I would like to Turn some chips on ;D
